Introduction

Quiet, overlooked and full of atmosphere, Patrika reveals another side of the Mastichochoria through its alleys, houses and small everyday gestures.

While travelling through the villages of southern Chios, George Tatakis stopped in Patrika, a lesser-known settlement of the Mastichochoria. Away from crowds and spectacle, the village revealed itself through abandoned houses, intimate courtyards, stillness and the subtle presence of people moving through its fading architectural world.

A quieter Mastichochori

Patrika does not announce itself loudly. Compared to the better-known villages of southern Chios, it feels quieter, more fragile and more hidden. That is precisely what gives it its power.

Walking through the village, I found a place shaped by worn stone, aging façades and a sense of abandonment that did not erase its beauty. Rather, it gave Patrika an intimate and contemplative atmosphere.

A small human gesture

Among the strongest moments was the sight of a woman sweeping a courtyard. That small gesture anchored the village in the present. Even in a place that seems to be slipping into memory, ordinary care continues to give life to space.

Patrika felt like a hidden gem because it offered no spectacle. Its beauty came from stillness, erosion and the rare human presences that made the village feel quietly inhabited.

Some villages reveal themselves not through spectacle, but through silence and small acts of care.
