Why this exists

Not a catalogue. Place, through dress.

Across Greece, local dress takes different forms from place to place. This section brings those differences together through photography — keeping the clothing connected to the people and settings that give it meaning.

By region

Move across Greece geographically and discover local forms of dress within each region.

By place

Explore individual towns, villages and islands through the photographs connected to them.

With context

Follow related stories and field notes to understand more than the image alone can show.

How it is built

Research before the frame.

01

Research

Regional dress is approached through local knowledge, existing collections and cultural context.

02

Collaboration

The photographs depend on people who know, preserve, prepare and wear these forms of dress.

03

Photography

The photographs are deliberately composed and directed in black and white, bringing dress, gesture, architecture and landscape into a single visual language.

Dress belongs to more than the body.

It belongs to place, memory and the people who carry it.

The photographic project

Caryatis

The photographic core of Local Costumes grows from Caryatis, George Tatakis’s long-term study of women in traditional dress across Greece.

In My Greece Atlas, the work is reorganised by region and place — becoming part of a wider way to explore Greek culture geographically.

Part of My Greece Atlas

One layer of a larger Greece.

Local Costumes sits alongside Traditional Events inside a growing cultural atlas — connecting traditions to geography, photography and context.
